The sun was brighter than usual that day, though beneath the Mediterranean, it was dimmed to the perfect amount throughout the temple grounds. Leaning with his back against a pillar, Canto yawned, flipping his tail to-and-fro boredly.

“I see you have nothing better to do.” The sound of the god nearing brought him to attention. “I have a mission for you then. Lead her to the Spanish coast.” He threw him the reigns of a lightly crafted chariot led by five yellow seahorses. “And it is not an option either.”

Canto shrugged, smiling as he looked her up and down. “I don’t object anyways. I’m eager to help this beautiful girl.”

Poseidon scowled, disgusted by his seductive demeanor. “She’s a human, Canto. And she’s been through enough with the kraken as it is.”

“Of course.” He began to feel guilty suddenly, taking the reigns. “I’ll get her home safely. You have my word, Poseidon.”

As the merman guided the reigns alongside the seahorses, he continuously would gaze back at the woman in the chariot. Passing by where the kraken had raped her, he let out a long sigh and settled into the chariot beside her.

“Something wrong?” Cordette couldn’t put her finger on it, but there was something about this merman that she liked. Perhaps it was that he was sarcastic without being rude, a step above the harpy or Pan. He actually had a good heart.

“Oh nothing,” he obviously lied with sadness. “It is just such a pity that more mermaids can’t look and smell like you.”

Cordette was shocked, but humbled. “Thank you, but I haven’t bathed since Spain. I smell atrocious.” Embarrassed by admitting this, she sunk her head.

Again, the merman burst into laughter. “Nonsense, Cordette, It is your natural pheromone, being under the water. It’s so… pure.”

“Pure?” She raised a brow at the word. Was it even a compliment to smell pure after her endeavors? “I’d hardly use that word.”

“Than natural,” Canto suggested, touching her hand. “Tell me something. Besides wanting to return to Spain, what is the one thing you want more than anything?”

“More than anything?” Releasing a long sigh, she closed her eyes. “More than anything, I just want to relax and clear my head. I’ve just been through too much disaster recently.”

Acting on instinct, he pulled the reigns to the chariot tight, halting it. Noticing her sudden confusion, he brushed a strand of hair from her face. “Than you shouldn’t be rushing home so quickly. There’s a better spot I can take you to instead.” Turning the chariot right, he pushed the seahorses onwards.

In mere minutes they had arrived by a waterfall that led into the sea. It was breathtaking, as the water became lighter here. The rushing sound was euphoric somehow.

Docking the chariot by the bay leading onto land, he watched the falls with relaxed shoulders. “Take all the time you want here to unwind.”

Cordette was excited as she ran from the chariot to collapse upon the ground. Land, she thought with a mental sigh of relief. Finally, I’m on land.
